Combo Watch: Dualcaster Mage + Twinflame, Infinite Loop for Under €5
Two cards for less than €5 that generate infinite tokens with haste. Here's how the loop works and where to slot it for maximum effect.
Combo Watch: Dualcaster Mage + Twinflame
Welcome back to another edition of Combo Watch on Mana Forge. Today we're covering one of the most elegant and accessible combos in the Commander format: Dualcaster Mage plus Twinflame. Two cards, less than five euros combined, and the game is over on the spot. Let's break it down piece by piece.
How the Combo Works
The color identity here is mono-red — both Dualcaster Mage and Twinflame are red cards, so we're working exclusively within R.
The loop works as follows:
- You have Dualcaster Mage in hand and Twinflame in hand (or vice versa).
- You cast Twinflame targeting at least one valid creature on the battlefield.
- Before Twinflame resolves, you cast Dualcaster Mage from your hand using its flash ability.
- When the Mage enters the battlefield, its triggered ability goes on the stack and copies Twinflame.
- The copy of Twinflame resolves, creating a token copy of Dualcaster Mage with haste.
- That token enters the battlefield and triggers again: it copies the original Twinflame (still on the stack).
- Repeat infinitely.
The result: infinite Dualcaster Mage tokens with haste, ready to attack that same turn. The game is mathematically over barring any interaction. It's worth noting that the loop requires Twinflame to still have at least one legal target each time it's copied, but the haste tokens themselves satisfy that requirement as they enter, so the loop sustains itself without any issues.
Minimum recommended bracket: 3. At bracket 2 or in more casual pods, this combo can feel frustrating due to its speed and how difficult it is to interact with.
Where to Play It (Suggested Commanders)
Being mono-red, the ideal commanders are those that support aggro, token, or storm strategies in R:
- Zada, Hedron Grinder — a natural synergy with spells that copy creatures. The Dualcaster loop fits perfectly into the deck's philosophy.
- Krenko, Mob Boss — already built around generating infinite Goblin tokens. Adding an independent two-card win condition is always healthy.
- Laelia, the Blade Reforged — tempo/aggro in style, appreciates having a compact combo as a plan B.
- Alibou, Ancient Witness — an artifact/vehicle commander, but in pure red it can leverage the combo as a plan B without disrupting the overall structure.
- Magda, Brazen Outlaw — the tokens enter with haste, and even though they aren't Dwarves, the sheer volume of attackers closes out the game with ease.
Lines of Play and Protection
The critical window is the moment Twinflame is on the stack and you're about to cast Dualcaster Mage. That's where opponents need to step in — and in pure red, the options for protecting that window are limited but real:
- Pyroblast and Red Elemental Blast: remove blue counterspells from the stack.
- Deflecting Swat: protects your creatures from targeted removal at zero cost if you control your commander.
- Bolt Bend: similar effect, excellent at a reduced cost with power 4+ on the battlefield.
- Ricochet Trap: redirects opposing counterspells.
A common mistake is casting Twinflame on a turn where you don't have mana left to pay the Mage's flash cost. Always make sure you have at least 2RR available (1R for Twinflame + RR for Dualcaster) before starting the sequence.
Budget vs. Premium Versions
The good news is that this combo is already budget-friendly by nature:
| Card | Current Price |
|---|---|
| Dualcaster Mage | €3.66 |
| Twinflame | €1.14 |
| Combo Total | €4.80 |
There is no "premium" version of either card — they're already at their most accessible printings. The real investment, if you want to push the deck to a competitive level, lies in the support package: efficient ramp like Sol Ring, Jeska's Will, Deflecting Swat, and lands like Ancient Tomb or Cavern of Souls to protect the Mage from interaction.
For those who want to stay fully budget, the deck still performs excellently at bracket 3 with supporting cards totaling under €50.
Verdict
Dualcaster Mage plus Twinflame is one of those combos that every red player should have on their radar. It costs next to nothing, comes together in a relatively natural way, and closes out the game instantly in a manner that is very difficult to answer when executed correctly. If you're playing mono-red at bracket 3 and haven't considered this five-euro package yet, now is the time.
