Combo Watch: Worldgorger Dragon + Animate Dead, Infinite Mana for €4
One of Commander's most iconic combos is back in the spotlight: a two-piece infinite mana loop for under 5 euros.
Combo Watch: Worldgorger Dragon + Animate Dead
Welcome to another instalment of Combo Watch, the column where we break down Commander's most interesting combos piece by piece. Today we're covering one of the oldest and most respected interactions in competitive play: Worldgorger Dragon + Animate Dead. Two cards, under 5 euros, infinite mana. Let's get into it.
How the Combo Works
The color identity of this combo is Black, since both Animate Dead and Worldgorger Dragon belong to that color. Keep that in mind when choosing a commander.
The engine is built on a self-sustaining loop of triggers:
- Worldgorger Dragon is in your graveyard (get it there via discard, Entomb, or any mill effect).
- You cast Animate Dead targeting Worldgorger Dragon: the Dragon enters the battlefield, and its ETB exiles all permanents you control — including Animate Dead itself.
- Because Animate Dead has left the battlefield, its upkeep-style enchantment clause resolves: Worldgorger Dragon is returned to the graveyard.
- When the Dragon leaves the battlefield, its LTB returns all exiled permanents — including Animate Dead, which re-enters the battlefield and automatically looks for a creature in the graveyard to reanimate.
- Choose Worldgorger Dragon again. The loop restarts.
Each cycle, all of your lands enter untapped, produce mana, then get exiled again. The mana produced stays in your mana pool between iterations, accumulating to infinity. The same applies to any other mana source.
Technical note: the loop is infinite but not automatic — you must declare each iteration. To exit the loop, point Animate Dead at a different creature the last time it "resets." Then use your infinite mana to close out the game.
Where to Play It
The combo only requires Black, so you have access to virtually every mono-colored or multicolored commander that includes Black. Here are five solid options:
- K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth — Pure Black, massive tutoring, and the ability to fill the graveyard quickly. An excellent enabler.
- Braids, Arisen Nightmare — Great for filling the graveyard through selective discard while pressuring opponents.
- Yawgmoth, Thran Physician — A cEDH staple with access to numerous tutor lines for the combo.
- Tevesh Szat, Doom of Fools — If you're playing Dimir or Grixis, he naturally combines control with combo access.
- Sidisi, Brood Tyrant — In Sultai (BUG), Sidisi actively mills your graveyard and rewards you with Zombies as a bonus while you assemble the pieces.
Lines of Play and Protection
To assemble the combo you need two things: Worldgorger Dragon in the graveyard and Animate Dead in hand (or a functional substitute). The classic lines are:
- Entomb — Fetches the Dragon directly into the graveyard for 1 mana. The fastest line available.
- Faithless Looting / Thrill of Possibility — Controlled discard, useful in the mid-game.
- Buried Alive — Puts three creatures into the graveyard, letting you set up a backup plan at the same time.
To protect the combo at the moment of resolution:
- Interaction mana: keep mana up for Duress, Cabal Therapy, or similar effects before casting Animate Dead.
- Split second: cards like Sudden Spoiling can lock out responses at the critical moment.
- Flash outlet: if you have infinite mana but the table still has answers, a win condition with flash (e.g., a sac outlet or a pinger) lets you resolve the win on the stack.
⚠️ Warning: if during the loop someone removes Worldgorger Dragon from the graveyard (e.g., Rest in Peace), you permanently lose all of your permanents. Play this combo with a clear read on your table's metagame.
Budget vs. Premium Versions
This combo is already natively budget-friendly: €4.63 total for the two key pieces.
| Role | Budget | Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Reanimation spell | Animate Dead (€3.19) | Dance of the Dead, Necromancy |
| Graveyard enabler | Buried Alive | Entomb |
| Win condition | Impact Tremors | Thassa's Oracle |
Necromancy is a notable upgrade because it has Flash, allowing you to assemble the combo on an opponent's turn or in response to something. Dance of the Dead is functionally identical to Animate Dead for the combo's purposes and often costs less.
Verdict
Worldgorger Dragon + Animate Dead is a two-piece, mono-colored combo that is both extremely accessible on a budget and devastating if left unanswered. The vulnerability to graveyard hate is real, but manageable with the right deck construction.
Recommended bracket: 3+ — too powerful and linear for casual tables, but perfect for players looking to level up without breaking the bank.
If you're building a Black combo deck and haven't included these two pieces yet, you've just found your first purchase of the month.
