Combo Watch: Worldgorger Dragon + Piranha Marsh

Welcome back to another instalment of Combo Watch, the column where we break down the most interesting Commander combos piece by piece. Today we're covering one of the cheapest lines in existence: less than two euros to deal infinite damage to all your opponents. Yes, you read that right.

How the combo works

First, let's talk color identity. Worldgorger Dragon is a red Dragon creature (with RRRR in its cost). Piranha Marsh is a colorless land with a drain effect. The combo's overall color identity is therefore mono-red — and as we'll see, that opens up some interesting possibilities while also imposing a few constraints.

Let's walk through the loop in detail:

  1. Worldgorger Dragon needs to be in your graveyard with an active, self-repeating reanimation source. The classic setup uses a reanimation enchantment with a repeated trigger (such as Dance of the Dead or Animate Dead) that brings the Dragon back onto the battlefield.
  2. When Worldgorger Dragon enters the battlefield, it exiles all permanents you control — including the reanimation enchantment itself.
  3. When the Dragon leaves the battlefield (because the exiled enchantment is no longer sustaining it), all exiled permanents return to the battlefield, including the enchantment, which immediately reanimates the Dragon again.
  4. The loop restarts, infinitely.

And that's where Piranha Marsh comes in: every time this land enters the battlefield as part of the loop, its trigger resolves — each opponent loses 1 life. With an infinite loop, that single point becomes lethal damage for every player at the table.

The elegant part is that Piranha Marsh is a perfectly playable land even outside the combo: it needs no setup to come into play, and its 1-point drain is a free bonus in any game. It's never a dead card, and that's exactly what makes it worth noting.

Technical note: the loop requires Piranha Marsh to already be on the battlefield when the loop goes off, or for it to be among the permanents exiled by the Dragon. Make sure it's on the battlefield before you kick off the reanimation.

Where to include it (suggested commanders)

The color identity is red, but since Piranha Marsh is colorless, technically all you need is red (or any identity that includes red) to use both pieces. The real bottleneck is the reanimation enchantments like Dance of the Dead and Animate Dead, which are black. In practice, this combo lives in Rakdos (RB) or broader color identities.

Lines of play and protection

The vulnerable point of the combo is the moment Worldgorger Dragon re-enters the battlefield: if an opponent responds with an instant that removes the Dragon before the loop completes, all of your permanents can end up exiled permanently. That's a very real risk.

Recommended protection:

  • Silence or Veil of Summer to lock down the stack at the moment you go off.
  • Deflecting Swat — free if you control your commander, and ideal for the job.
  • Going off at a moment when opponents are already tapped out (after someone else's combat step).

Budget vs. premium versions

The combo itself is already budget by default: Worldgorger Dragon at €1.42 and Piranha Marsh at €0.11, for a total of €1.53. The real cost of the deck lies in the reanimation enchantments and tutors.

Verdict

This combo earns its place in Bracket 3 decks looking for a concise, resilient, and above all affordable win condition. Piranha Marsh already pulls its weight as a baseline land, and Worldgorger Dragon is one of those cards that anyone who plays reanimator knows well. If you already have a reanimator shell, slotting in this line will literally cost you less than a cup of coffee.

Execution difficulty: medium (requires setup and timing). Power ceiling: high (immediate lethal damage). Entry cost: €1.53. Hard to do better than that.
