The Sentry, Golden Guardian: 5 Hidden Gems to Tame The Void

Give your opponent a flying 5/5 monster for free. Here's how to turn that poisoned gift into a deadly trap.

There's a moment, on the first turn The Sentry, Golden Guardian lands on the table, when every eye turns to the designated opponent. They smile, because they just got a free indestructible flying 5/5. Then they read the second line: "The Void attacks each combat if able." The smile fades slowly as they realize they've just inherited a rabid dog they have to walk every single turn, whether they want to or not.

This is the beating heart of Commander: it's not a deck that wins by itself, it's a deck that forces the other players to manage a threat you created but don't control. The Void is a mandatory attacker — a permanent piece of chaos in the middle of the table that destabilizes everyone else's board, disrupts blocks, and often forces the designated opponent to burn resources just to survive their own new pet. Your job, then, isn't so much "do stuff with The Sentry" as it is building an environment where the chaos generated by The Void works in your favor, while you stay safe thanks to flyers, protection, and passive board control. Throw in a handful of repeatable ETBs with blink and you've got a self-sustaining engine.

The five gems

Senu, Keen-Eyed Protector — This is probably the most underrated card on this list for this commander. Senu grants vigilance to another creature and lets it attack alone by evading blocks under certain conditions — but more importantly, being a 2-mana piece that stays on the battlefield generating value, it's the perfect tool to protect the plane on which you attack while The Void is busy causing havoc elsewhere. In a mid-power bracket, where the table tends to concentrate removal on the most visible threat (The Void, obviously), Senu gives you room for quiet maneuvering. The multiplier here is indirect but real: every turn that passes with The Void distracting the others is a turn Senu buys you quality time.

Hopeful Vigil — A two-mana enchantment that rarely makes the top ten EDHRec entries for a white-vigilance deck, but here it shines for a specific reason: The Sentry itself is indestructible and flies, so Hopeful Vigil can be cast purely with the intent of protecting YOUR other creatures (maybe the ones managing the board while The Void sows chaos elsewhere), or targeting something threatening to remove your Sentry before its ETB can trigger again via blink. In tables where removal exists but hasn't reached cEDH levels yet, this card is a cheap insurance policy nobody sees coming.

Zeriam, Golden Wind — A legendary griffin that punishes anyone who attacks or blocks you, and it's exactly the kind of deterrent needed when there's an indestructible flying 5/5 on the table that MUST attack someone every turn. Zeriam creates a perverse incentive: opponents managing The Void start thinking twice before redirecting aggression toward you, because the cost of attacking you goes up. The synergy multiplier here is conceptual rather than mechanical — Zeriam turns the ambient fear generated by The Void into a defensive moat around your board.

Guardian of Faith — Here the synergy is almost quiet but devastating in the right bracket: it protects your creatures from destruction during your turn. Since The Sentry wants to stay on the battlefield to keep generating pressure (even just by existing, given it already has indestructible, but especially to protect the rest of the team handling The Void's chaos), Guardian of Faith is a smart anti-board-wipe piece in brackets 2-3, where symmetrical wraths are common but not yet optimized to get around this kind of protection.

Angel of Condemnation — The real gem of the deck. Flickering one of your creatures in response to removal or a block is already great, but applied to The Sentry itself it means a second (and third, and fourth) Void handed to the opponent every time you re-trigger the ETB. Picture the table with two or three Voids forced to attack each other or clog up the designated opponent's board: it's pure chaos, and it's a massive multiplier because it scales linearly with the number of flicker effects you can pack into the deck.

What NOT to add

Save yourself the generic textbook ramp — Avacyn, Angel of Hope at 8 mana, for example, arrives too late and its "global indestructible" paradoxically undoes part of your plan: if opponents' creatures become indestructible along with yours, you lose a key tool for getting rid of The Void once it stops being useful or once the opponent has equipped it into a problem for you too. Likewise, avoid heavy packages of expensive angels like Seraph of the Suns or Serra's Guardian just because "they're white and fly": the deck doesn't want a bloated top-end, it wants ETB speed and cheap repetition. Finally, leave passive draw like "draw a card at end of turn" at home: The Sentry doesn't need cards in hand, it needs to repeat its trigger as fast as possible.

The final word

The Sentry doesn't win by pushing a single big threat onto the table: it wins by making the entire table unstable, while it perches there, indestructible, watching the disaster it triggered unfold. The true gems of this commander aren't the cards screaming "look at me," but the quiet ones that keep you alive long enough to watch The Void do the dirty work for you, turn after turn, until the designated opponent no longer remembers why they were smiling.
